Luella used to dark craven comic strips...
Now there's luellajane.com - which is, for black & white purists a bit of a shock - but it's darned nice to see those wonky lines of hers parading about.
John Weeks, a chap off the Comix@ mailing list is in London this week (it's a bumber week for Americans!) and we're hoping to meet up, so I figured I'd better check out his stuff. His site has some of his comics on it and he does a load of travelling, which is partially documented here (confess I have't had a good dig through yet) but of interest to the wider BugPowder crowd is his column on Silver Bullet where he lists everything he's come across recently. Kinda like an intensive blogging session. Loads of links and useful info.Get to it!
Don't forget, theres a Small press comics event on this weekend, Saturday 1st December in Newcastle. Admission is free, there's lots of comics on sale and lots of creators and enthusiasts to sit and have a beer with. For more details visit:www.tgtokyo.com
Also from LMG a six page preview on the Guardian site of Jimmy Corrigan which, as you may know, has made it to the shortlist for their First Book award and is tipped as a favourite. I've noticed it keeps being mentioned as a potential seller at work with a note to ensure it's well displayed. Which should warm your hearts somewhat.
Dean Haspiel is in London this weekend and has suggested meeting up in a pub to ensure he is kept "hip to the UK square". Looks like Highgate. Anyone interested, let me know and I'll let you know. I'll try and post confirmation of time and place to the mailing list nearer the time.
Been reading some of the previews from the 9-11: Emergency Relief comic Jeff Mason at Alternative Comics is putting together. Aside from the big charity thing, I think this is going to be a rather good book, given then most of the contributors are known their 'personal' stories. 192 pages, ships January. (Previews by Dino and Josh Neufeld here, plus more.)
Have a look at this website with lots of Krigstein comics. The text is too small to read them really comfortably, but is decipherable, and you get a good impression of his work. I knew his name but had not seen much of the comics. Have there been any reissues?
Paul Gravett probably doesn't want you to know this, but he's appearing on Radio 3's arts programme Nightwaves on Thursday night at 9.30pm talking about Ghost World. Listen in and shout "Go Paul! Go!" at your radio.
Just noticed the Caption web site has moved to caption.org and while it's pretty much the same they do link to Matt Brooker's Caption 2001 photos which are as nice and lovely as ever (except the one of me gurning to a French man while iLya looks elswhere...)
Andy Konky Kru has asked me to announce his latest venture on this site (he still can't blog): The Comics Lexikon, being an alphabetical listing of key creators with, and this is the important part, samples. So far A, B and C are done. Go play.
Andy says, "the first person who tells me where the picture [with the eyes] comes from get's a complimentary issues of the next Magazine". Emails to Andy please!
First wave of the Nick Abadzis news - more to follow no doubt. The entirety of his epic and woefully under-read Hugo Tate : O' America is available as an Ebook download from Unbound Comics. If you haven't read this and can't borrow a paper version, you owe it to yourself to download this. One of the 10 or so greatest comics to come out of the UK last decade, I think. Well worth $5.75.
This is the index for the Reading Room of the Michigan State University Libraries Comic Art Collection. It's slightly frustrating that you can't get your hands on it all unless you're in Michigan, but it's interesting to see what's available on certain creators and companies. They've got Comics Journal interviews archived, for example, so you can use it to locate interviews should you have a massive pile of the things.
LOS BROS Tribute Issue with commentaries from Darick ROBERTSON (Transmet), Nick ABADZIS, Gene PHILLIPS, David CHOE, Brett WARNOCK, Andi WATSON and more. Find out? who Jaime envisions as Spooky The Smokey (hint: acclaimed comic book writer); and who Gilbert thinks would make a great Chelo in an L&R movie. And just how does Forrest Whitaker, Joey Ramone and J-Lo fit into all of this anyway? All will be answered. Plus more Letters, Flotsam, Pyrrhic Victories, and JAMIE DELANO redux. All under a wraparound cover by Abadzis that shines like the sun itself.
Another reminder that "Bishi Bashi" (a small press comics event, held in Newcastle) will take place on the 1st of December. Please get in touch a.s.a.p if you would like to sell or promote your work at this event. Also, if you can help us distribute flyers we would be very grateful. (they are very nice flyers...) You can contact us via our site : www.tgtokyo.com
